Day 0 ~ The Airplane

1

our group – pre-departure

I’m on the plane. Been up in the air for about an hour and a half now. I took a pill to help me sleep, and I was almost drifting off but they have woken me for food. May as well eat, I guess.

So… my row was lucky enough to have malfunctioning movie screens. I was checking out what movies were available to watch but didn’t see much that interested me. It was a bit disappointing but I figured I could just sleep. But then, when I opened my eyes to survey the food cart situation, I saw that one of my classmates in the row and ahead of me was watching BD2, specifically Bella’s first hunt. What?! Why was this not an option for me? (BTW, the girl beside me also happens to be a Rob/Twilight fan. How lucky am I?!) So, naturally, I grabbed a flight attendant and explained that apparently our row’s screens are missing icons. She’s gonna reset the system after the meals are cleared away.

2

She’s watching. Why can’t I?

Just finished the first meal. Not too bad. A chicken/vegetable something or other with a white, peppery sauce. Bun, salad (of which I did not partake), and chocolate mousse.

3

As I was saying, there is no way I’m NOT watching Breaking Dawn when it’s an option. Is it weird that this will be my third time watching it on an airplane?

The plane itself is not so bad. It’s the same type as the one I flew to and from Japan in. As in big. They have those crazy pods in first class. Then 2 separated sections for economy class. The economy rows are 3 seats on either side and 3 in the middle. All of us that are travelling together are all sitting with each other. I have three girls in front of me, two in my row (I’m in the aisle seat – 36C to be precise), the guy and the two degree students in the aisle next to me, and one straggler by herself (poor her!) in front of that row. Actually, not poor her. She’s still with us. Just sharing her row with other people. And she’s the one watching Breaking Dawn. (She is the lucky one, if you ask me.)

I’m not in the mood for reading or watching movies right now. Gonna nap for a bit first. The pill I took is making me groggy and quite unstable on my feet. Might want to take advantage of that before it wears off. I do have a lot to occupy myself with if doesn’t work out.

When I wake up, I hope she’s remembered to restart our systems.

Oh, and BTW~ this is a 15 hour flight. I thought it was only 12. Yuck. Poor us.

7

It took so long because we took the scenic route through Northern Canada and Russia.

There was this nuts chick behind me at security that had a full bottle of lotion and was arguing to bring it on the plane. I couldn’t hear was what being said but she turned the bottle upside down and starting squirting it out everywhere. It was causing a bit of a scene. The security personnel lady was calling for back up and 2 more guards showed up. I lost interest since no one was screaming or being thrown to the ground. Boooo. I wonder if she ended up getting on the plane. Haha.

Also, when we got down to the gates area, there was a souvenir shop where I picked up 3 boxes of icewine chocolates and 4 boxes of maple crème cookies (since it was buy 3, get one free) for the teacher gifts. It was just over $50. But then I went into the convenience store and they had even more stuff. Like maple or icewine tea bags, and other candies and stuff. I bought just one box of maple tea and these maple sugar things. I figured I could leave that in their staff room for them to share. Then I also saw little dream catcher cell phone charms. So I bought three of those too. All told, $100 on teacher gifts. I know, I know. I’m stupid.

Dammit. The system is reset but the new release icons are still missing. No fair. I DO have the first four movies on my laptop as well as my personal bootleg copy. I COULD just watch those… But I kinda wanted to check out Life of Pi too.

Well, that settles that. For now, I’m gonna listen to some nice classical music, curl up with my lumpy pillow and fuzzy Edward blankie, and go to sleep.

Update: Movie situation was rectified (icons still didn’t work but apparently selecting negative space works), BD2 was watched, at least 11 hours of sleep was had, two more meals were consumed, and everyone landed in Hong Kong safely.

10

11

2nd meal: cup noodles, brick sandwich, and a cookie

12

3rd meal: congee, fruit, and inedible bread

Welcome to Hong Kong!

Journal Entry #1

As part of our requirements for our supervising teacher, we have to complete six journal entries on assigned topics. The first one is sort of just an overview of our feelings pre-departure. I did a similar one on my own for my Japan trip blog so I thought I may as well post this too.

~~~~~~~~
I’m leaving for Hong Kong in 3 days. Although I am pretty prepared, I don’t really feel that way. Any new situation creates a certain amount of anxiety, and lucky me, I tend to feel it more than the average person. Of course, I am excited, but it’s tempered with equal parts of the anxiety. Not for any one thing in particular, but just the whole situation. There is so much that can’t be known ahead of time. Will the children and teachers like me? Will I plan suitable activities? Will I enjoy where I am staying? Will I like the food? What if I get sick? Will I be more homesick than I anticipate? What if it is so hot that it’s all I can think about? All these things jumble together in my brain and create a ball of nerves that sits in my centre.
I realize this makes me sound like a total neurotic mess. I’m not really. I am looking forward to many things as well. The adorable-ness of the kids is at the top of my list. I think that is a given. I already get along with the people I’ve met that are going to be sharing the space with me. I think that will be fun. And I’ve wanted to go to China for years. It’s getting to live out another one of my dreams. I feel lucky in that sense. Many people can’t say the same. I’m really looking forward to the sight-seeing ~ namely street markets and temples. There is nothing in particular I need to see. Whatever arises is fine with me. Although it seems like a waste to be going all the way there and NOT being able to visit the Great Wall… I guess that can’t really be helped if there is a health advisory in effect. I’m still holding out hope that we can make it work.
We have been given lists of things to do in preparation for leaving and most of those things I have crossed off already. My paperwork is all in order, gifts for the children I will be working with have been purchased, and I did a vast amount of clothes shopping. I am required to wear business appropriate attire that is both modest and weather suitable. I owned next to nothing of that nature. Now I have enough to last me the entire month without having to wear the same thing every day (which is also a relief to my nerves). I have all the other things purchased that I may need (all the toiletries that I am accustomed to and may not be able to find in the scents/brands I prefer and a little medicine kit – essentially a small pharmacy). I also exchanged the equivalent of about $50 CAD to HKD just to cover me for the first night.
1
gifts for the children
2
travel pharmacy
3
newly purchased toiletries – enough for a whole month
4
shoulder bag, HK$, passport, credit cards, etc.
One thing I still need to do is to buy gifts for the teachers I will be working with. Usually when visiting from a foreign country, you bring something small – souvenir trinket-y type things, indicative of your home country – to give to those who put up with you when you’re there. I looked. Found nothing I felt was appropriate. I was hoping to get something at a particular gift store in the mall I frequent most often but it had closed down. So, in a true procrastinator’s fashion, I am relegated to the airport gift shops. I’m not thrilled about that, but seeing as there is nothing close-by and I don’t drive… not much choice.
Other than having everything I need to take with me in order, there isn’t a lot I feel that I can do to prepare myself. I kind of wish I could pre-plan all my activities but I don’t think that’s possible. Although, that would relieve a ton of stress. Hmmm….
I already have weird sleeping habits that are completely backwards in my time zone, so I won’t have to deal with jet lag. I’ve talked to quite a few people about my feelings, so that helps to calm me down a bit. And everyone is fairly liberal with advice, of course. The funniest was “don’t kiss any Chinese men and don’t eat pork, so you don’t catch that flu” which somehow later evolved to the reminder of not kissing any pigs. Noted. Thank you.
8
also bought a new suitcase and backpack – seems excessive but they were both very necessary
Really? Another Blog?!
This one at least has a purpose…
hk.jpg
As part of my ECE (Early Childhood Education) diploma program, we are required to do a work experience placement at a child care centre each semester after the first is completed. It’s a 2 year (4 semester) program, so that means 3 placements.
Part way through our first semester, during a field placement information session, one of the teachers mentioned that for our third and final placement, it was possible to qualify for an “atypical” placement. That meant working in a setting other than the usual day care or preschool. The various opportunities included a kindergarten classroom as part of the newly imposed full-day early learning where both a teacher and an ECE work together, or in a hospital paediatric ward, etc.
The final thing our teacher mentioned was that each year, a handful of students were selected to go to Hong Kong to do their final placement in a preschool there. I internally freaked out. Okay, maybe a bit on the outside too. If you know much about me, you may already have clued in to the fact that I *might* be a tad obsessed with Asian culture, specifically in regards to China and Japan. In my head, I was ready to fight my entire class to ensure I was one of the ones who got to go. (I may have said as much and administered a whole lot of stink eye, too.)
The teacher told us that in order to be selected, we had to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher and prove economic ability and various other points. From that point on, I became a total grade whore. I worked hard for my 4.0 and kept it up the entire two years. (No easy feat for me. I’m extremely lazy and a world-class procrastinator. Plus, a career drop-out.)
I was a little worried about the financial aspect for a while and was wondering how I was going to swing it. I don’t work while I’m in school (not an effective multi-tasker). Luckily, things really seemed to be meant to be. My parents sold the condo my brother and his wife were living in and offered them a nice chunk to help them out with a down payment for a new house. They deemed it “only fair” to give the same amount to my sister and I to do with whatever we pleased. I had no qualms.
So, grades and funding? Check and check. I also made it quite clear to every single teacher I had that I was determined to go and put the idea in their heads that they should do whatever they could to help me out. Several were very accommodating and gave me glowing references when the time came.
When our final semester was approaching, the organizers of the trip held formal interviews for the 30 or so students who had shown interest. Only 8 would be selected from the diploma program and 4 from the degree program. It was intense. I had a panel of 5 faculty I had never met before interview me for over an hour. Nerve-racking, to say the least. But I made it. I was selected as one of the lucky 8. (Haha, lucky 8… get it? No? Ask me later, if you care.)
So~ when all of my classmates started their final field placements, I had those three days a week for 7 weeks off. Obviously, it isn’t possible to attend classes and be in Hong Kong at the same time. The way it’s planned is that once classes were over, we would have 2 weeks to prepare and then go to Hong Kong for an entire month. Which is the stage I am in now – preparation. All of my friends have officially graduated but I technically won’t until my placement is completed successfully.
And, the point~
Unlike all but one of my classmates, I am married. (I’m more than 10 years older than most of them, too.) Hubby wasn’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of me leaving for a month, but he’s always been very supportive, and we live quite a different lifestyle than most couples our age (no kids, etc.) so there was no real reason I couldn’t go.
Neither hubby or I are fans of talking on the phone. There is Skype, of course, but there is a 12 hour time difference between Toronto and Hong Kong so scheduled times to talk will probably be brief. This blog was actually his idea. He thought I should describe my days as I would to him and he could catch up on all that stuff on his own time. I thought that would also be a convenient way to keep multiple people informed without having to write a lot of emails. Two birds.
So there it is. Enjoy my experience vicariously.
And don’t worry, the posts will NOT be this long.
This is the school I will be at ~ and this is where I will be living.
Him
I like him because he’s easy. There is none of that trying to figure out if he’s being real. None of that wondering what is going on underneath and if what I see is really what he’s like. He’s upfront and honest and…just easy. Comfortable. Natural. I don’t second guess him. Ever. I so appreciate that. It’s very refreshing.
The Battle
Some days, I really struggle with my thoughts.
I want to sleep it all gone.
Close my eyes against the tears.
The Six Degrees of Robert Pattinson
If you’re at all like me, you might just be a huge tangled ball of nerves right now. With all the waiting we’ve been having to endure and postponing of the release of information, you might be having trouble trying to sleep. And let’s face it… more sleepless nights will probably arise as we get closer to the premiere date.
Well, I have something that might help you. When I can’t get my mind to slow down at night, I tend to play little games in my head (listing all the states alphabetically, listing as many types of whatevers as I can, etc.). The other night I made up a new game. Try it. See if it helps you. (I also played it the next morning as I was trying to get my brain to function again on what little sleep I had achieved.)
Who remembers the game ‘the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’? (a pun of the six degrees of separation) As it was explained to me, any actor in Hollywood can be traced back to Kevin Bacon in six steps or less. Fun right?
As we all know, Rob’s acting career has been on the rise, therefore creating more and more connections. So I wondered if it were possible to play the game with him instead. The answer is yes. Yes, it is. And it’s sooooo much more appealing than Kevin Bacon.
rob
To test it out, I decided to start with the original. Kevin Bacon. Here’s how that went:
Kevin Bacon was in X-Men First Class. So was Edi Gathegi. Who was in Twilight and New Moon ~ with Rob.
Only 2 degrees!
NOTE: I’m still refining my own personal rules. Hubby says you can ONLY use actors and it has to be a direct connection. I’m if-y on that. Can’t we use directors and musicians as well? And can it be a relationship link instead of a costar? Use your own discretion but make your rules clear before you play, to be fair. 😉
So, if you decided non-actor links are okay, this works too…
Kevin Bacon -> X-Men First Class w/ Oliver Platt who was in Kinsey which was directed Bill Condon who directed Breaking Dawn Parts 1&2 ~ starring Rob.
3 degrees.
So I was happy the game worked. But it was still technically the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon at that point. I had to see if it works for Rob too. Where to begin?
I had the song “Tribute” by Tenacious D stuck in my head at that moment since it was the last thing I heard on my iPod that day. Jack Black. Challenge accepted.
Jack Black was in Shallow Hal with Gwenyth Paltrow who was in Se7en with Kevin Spacey who was in The Big Kahuna with Peter Facinelli who was in all the Twilight movies ~ with Rob.
4 degrees.
I was on a roll!
The next actor I picked was another person I used to hoard pictures on my computer of (don’t ask why) and I picked her because she’s not from Hollywood and I thought it would be harder and I would fall asleep while thinking. Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang (from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) …No such luck.
Ziyi Zhang was in Rush Hour 2 with Chris Tucker who was in The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis who was in Pulp Fiction with Uma Thurman who was in Bel Ami ~ with Rob.
Only 4 degrees for Rob to get to China.
Testing out the idea of using relationships and non-actors, I next chose my 2 favourite bands, Weezer and Muse.
Well, Muse can be directly linked to Twilight but that was no fun. So…
Muse lead singer is Matthew Bellamy who is married (Did they get married? They at least have a kid…) to Kate Hudson who was in 200 Cigarettes with Christina Ricci who was in Bel Ami ~ with Rob.
3 degrees.
Weezer was featured on the soundtrack to Mallrats (with their song “Susanne“, FYI) which was directed by and starred Kevin Smith who was (briefly) in Fanboys with Jay Baruchel who was in Cosmopolis ~ starring Rob.
3 degrees.
Just to have a ready list, I decided to use the other men from “My List of 5” (freebies list). Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, and Brad Pitt (who was just bumped for Billy Burke). (Kellan is on my list too, but that connection is obvious.)
Johnny Depp is in (everything, but let’s just pick) Sweeny Todd with Helena Bonham Carter who is in multiple Harry Potter movies (although not Goblet of Fire, hence the extra link) with (take your pick) Alan Rickman who IS in Goblet of Fire ~ with Rob.
3 degrees.
NOTE: You can also get from Kevin Smith to Rob through the Alan Rickman connection.
Ryan Reynolds is in Adventureland with Kristen who is (duh) in the Twilight movies ~ with Rob.
2 degrees.
Brad Pitt is in Mr. & Mrs. Smith with (and is married to) Angelina Jolie who is in Girl, Interrupted with Brittany Murphy who was in Uptown Girls with Dakota Fanning who is in several Twilight movies ~ with Rob.
4 degrees.
Then I decided to use my hubby’s ‘#1/freebie’.
Natalie Portman who is in V for Vandetta with Hugo Weaving who is in The Lord of the Rings movies with Dominic Monaghan who is in Lost with Emilie de Ravin who is in Remember Me ~ with Rob.
4 degrees.
(I could have gone Star Wars -> Samuel L. Jackson -> Pulp Fiction -> Uma… but that’s repetitive.)
Then I thought Star Wars… original trilogy. My childhood favourites. Harrison Ford, my schoolgirl crush.
Harrison Ford who was in Extreme Measures with Kerry Russell who was in August Rush with Jonathan Rhys Meyers who was in Vanity Fair (which Rob was in, but was cut, so…) with Reese Witherspoon who was in Water for Elephants ~ with Rob.
4 degrees.
My other favourite childhood movie was E.T.
Drew Barrymore who was in Riding in Cars with Boys with Peter Facinelli who (also previously used) was in the Twilight movies ~ with Rob.
2 degrees.
Hubby and I just started watching The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon is my favourite. Thought that might be harder. Wrong again.
Jim Parsons (he is in The Big Year with Jack Black but, again…no) who was in The Muppets with Chris Cooper who was in Remember Me ~ with Rob.
2 degrees.
It’s better to play this game when you get someone to randomly give you actor’s names. It makes it more challenging. Hubby offered up two.
Mark Ruffalo who was in Avengers with (I already used Gwenyth Paltrow. I didn’t WANT to use Chris Hemsworth. I didn’t think Rob would appreciate using THAT movie as a connection. *I* didn’t appreciate it. So I went with~) Scarlet Johansson who was in We Bought a Zoo with Elle Fanning who was in My Neighbor Totoro with (her sister) Dakota Fanning who (as said already) is in Twilight movies ~ with Rob.
4 degrees.
Based on the fact that all my connections have been 4 degrees or less, Rob is MUCH better than Kevin Bacon!
rob vs bacon.JPG
So, if you are having trouble sleeping, or waking up, or are just bored trying to pass the time, give the Six Degrees of Robert Pattinson a try!
Let me know what you come up with.
And feel free to challenge me to come up with more. I like this game.
New FF Posted
I finally decided to share my Twilight Saga continuation story that I’ve been working on for the past year with… well, everyone, I guess. Before tonight, not a single soul has even laid eyes on it.
I just posted it to fanfiction.net.  If you don’t mind~ read it.  Then tell me it doesn’t suck.
I’m a TwiBetween
And it’s official! I have been added to twibetween.com’s “Meet a Twibetween” ~ and I’m so freaking happy right now!
I decided to add the interview here as well (for posterity’s sake), but you should check it out over there because… well, it’s cooler! (That blog has since been locked for privacy. See? Posterity, dude.)
Age? 32
Married? Kids? married for 5 years (together for 12), no kids
Declare yourself! Team Edward, Team Jacob or Switzerland? I am 100% Team Edward. I love him. Always have, always will. But I adore Jacob too.
When/how did your Twilight obsession begin? I’m just nearing my one year anniversary. I came very late to the party. I was against it on principle, without knowing anything about it, due to it’s popularity and teen-magnetism. One day last August, out of boredom, I watched Twilight. Then New Moon. Then Eclipse. All in one sitting. Then as soon as they were over, all three again immediately. Then got all four books (4.5 if you count Midnight Sun) the next day and read them in three days. And it just kept going from there. (I blogged the long extended answer to this question here.)
What is your favorite Twilight Quote? So many, but off the top of my head~ “I’m tired of trying to stay away from you, Bella.”“Can you [forgive me]? I hope you can because I honestly don’t know how to live without you.”
What scene/line from the books that you love was missing from the movies? I wish I could see the ENTIRE plot lines of all the books come to life but I understand some just don’t translate well or slow down the momentum of the movies but I would have liked to have the conversation in the car on the way back from Port Angeles the way it was in the book. And the reconciliation/realization of Bella and Edward after they returned to Forks rather than before she meets the Volturi. I was also looking forward to seeing Jacob try to imprint at the park. And there was no mention of “puppies” in Part 1!
Who is your favorite non-holy twinity (minor) character? I really love Charlie, Alice, and Angela but I think my favourite is Emmett.
Which is your favorite Twilight movie? OMG, I can’t choose! I love them all for very different reasons. The freshness/innocence/sense-of-discovery in Twilight, the heartbreak and angst in New Moon, the love triangle and the visual beauty of Eclipse, the epic-ness of Breaking Dawn Part 1.
Which is your favorite Edward, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse or Breaking Dawn? Again, can’t choose. I am so all about Edward. If I HAD to pick, probably Eclipse. I love how he overcomes his jealousy and would do anything just as long as Bella is happy. And Rob is so pretty in that movie!
Review Breaking Dawn Part 1 in 5 words or less: Can’t wait for part 2!
Renesmee- B.S. or creative name? I don’t mind it. It’s interesting. And like Stephenie Meyer said, it’s a name for a character in a book, not a real person.
What is your favorite Soundtrack overall? Oh gawd, with the choosing! Maybe New Moon? There are songs I love and songs I could do without on each one but I listen to them all and the scores regularly (like right now, as I write this).
What is your favorite song from a Twilight soundtrack? Very hard question to answer. The songs I love, I REALLY love. I adore any and all Muse. I love Turning Page, Flightless Bird, My Love, Shooting the Moon, Possibility, Eyes on Fire, and Spotlight. But I’m going to have to go with Never Think and Let Me Sign. Rob’s voice does things to me…
Ideal vacay? Trip to Forks, Rob/Kristen set stalking, Brit Pack concert in LA, or a non-Twi premiere? Set stalking! Preferably to whatever Rob is allegedly writing for himself and Kristen. How awesome would that be?!
Are you going to the Breaking Dawn 2 Premiere? I wish… 😦 I would give a lung, a kidney, and half my liver to go! But no one I know would come with me and it’s not something you can really do alone.  …Or can I?!
Do you have a favorite fan fic you’re reading right now? I don’t read too much fanfic… The only ones I’ve read have been either continuation stories or EPOV’s. I like to stick to the world Stephenie created. Although, I love 50 Shades, so maybe I should…  I wrote a little 1000-word scene that is up on my fanfiction.net account (New Moon ~ What If) and maybe one day I’ll add the post-Breaking Dawn story I’m working on.
What is your favorite Non-Twilight film of a Twilight star? They are such great actors… Cosmopolis was great. I really liked Welcome to the Rileys and SWATH. Push was also cool too. But I’m a sucker for the romance. I loved Remember Me.  I can’t wait to see Bel Ami and On the Road though.
Do you have a TwiBestie?  😦 No one I know is really into Twilight. I’m currently accepting applications for the position! Looking for my TWIn.
What is your favorite Twilight memory? Going to see BD1 on opening night with my husband. Although he doesn’t like my obsession (I think he’s secretly jealous of a fictious character and the actor who portrays him), he’s pretty supportive.
Anything else you want us to know about you? Although I seem very outgoing, I’m pretty shy and often don’t initiate conversations but I love talking about Twilight and listening to other people’s take as well. Come say hi to me on Twitter (@kmuffin88) or leave a comment on my blog (please).
It’s My Twiliversary!
Today marks the one year anniversary of the day I fell into the Twilight universe. Only a year?! IKR! Yes, I was a (very) late-comer. (If you’re interested in THAT story, read it here.)
I was thinking back to my original thoughts on the movies and the books and was going to write about that. But it’s really boring, even to me. So~ scrap that.
I don’t have too much to say (Why do I even have a blog?) but I wanted to put something down to commemorate the occasion. I’ll just share my gratitude for the entire experience.
twilight.jpg
Thank you to Stephenie Meyer for having that dream and deciding to share it with the world.
Thank you to Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, David Slade, and (especially) Bill Condon for bringing that world to life.
Thank you to Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the rest of the cast for portraying our beloved characters so wonderfully.
Thank you to Twilight in general ~ it has resparked my interest in reading, watching movies, and listening to music, even beyond the franchise itself. Twilight has brought me back to life.
And thank you to the fandom. Although my entrance into this world is still brand new, I can finally talk about something I’m interested in with like-minded people and you’ve all been welcoming and overwhelmingly kind. I already love you. *smooch*
It’s Been a Good 24 Hours
I haven’t posted anything since the fiasco. Now seems to be the time.
He’s alive! He smiles! I can breathe again~
Rob’s appearance last night with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, followed by the NY Cosmopolis premiere. Then this morning’s bell ringing at NYSE and the multitude of pictures that resulted from a 8 second walk from indoors to a car.
He was looking sooooooo good. From Gucci suits to casual jeans and a t-shirt, that man can pull of anything.
These are my personal favourites. Enjoy…
